The Family Service Association of Indianapolis was founded in 1835 as the Indianapolis Benevolent Society, a private charity. By 1922 it had become the Family Welfare Society. It took on its current name in 1945 to reflect a shift in emphasis to family counselling and education. Founded in 1876 as a group of women who took flowers to patients at Indianapolis City Hospital. Over the years the mission took on a number of projects, including founding a boys' home (1879); a nursing school (1883); Eleanor Hospital (1895) for children; and a tuberculosis hospital (1936).
